Manchester United handed Arsenal their first home defeat of the season with a dramatic 3-2 victory on Sunday, a result that reopened the Premier League title race. Aston Villa also took advantage as they beat Newcastle 2-0 to move within four points of the league leaders.
Villa's win at St James' Park lifted Unai Emery's side level on points with Manchester City, who were among the beneficiaries of Arsenal's slip at the Emirates Stadium. The weekend's results have tightened the race at the top and renewed belief among several challengers.
Just a week after dismantling City in the Manchester derby, United continued their strong run under new manager Michael Carrick. Matheus Cunha was the hero in north London, scoring a spectacular late winner to silence the home crowd and cap a memorable comeback.
Arsenal had taken the lead through a Lisandro Martinez own goal, but their advantage did not last long. Bryan Mbeumo punished a mistake by Martin Zubimendi to bring United level, before Patrick Dorgu struck early in the second half to put the visitors ahead.
Despite their lofty position in the table, Arsenal again struggled to create chances from open play. Their response came from a familiar source as Mikel Merino bundled home from a corner in the 84th minute to restore parity. The relief was brief, however, as Cunha unleashed a fierce shot from outside the box moments later to clinch the points.
"It is a really painful one," said Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. "But this is the moment to stand by the players who have given us so much and keep pushing together."
United's win lifted them into the top four and strengthened their bid to return to the Champions League for the first time in three seasons. Carrick praised his side's resilience, highlighting their ability to recover from setbacks and keep believing.
At Newcastle, Villa produced a composed display to claim their first victory at St James' Park in 21 years. Emiliano Buendia opened the scoring with a fine long range effort, before Ollie Watkins sealed the win late on with a header from Lucas Digne's cross. Emery acknowledged the strength of the teams around them but insisted his side are ready to compete.
Elsewhere, Chelsea deepened Crystal Palace's struggles with a 3-1 win at Selhurst Park. Palace are now winless in 11 matches and fell behind after a defensive error allowed Estevao to score. Joao Pedro doubled the lead after the break, and Enzo Fernandez converted a penalty to complete the victory.
Nottingham Forest boosted their survival hopes with a vital 2-0 win at Brentford, moving five points clear of the relegation zone thanks to goals from Igor Jesus and Taiwo Awoniyi.
