Oscar Piastri claimed his maiden Formula 1 pole position in an electrifying qualifying session for the Chinese Grand Prix on March 22, 2025. The McLaren driver delivered a stunning lap time of 1:30.641, edging out Mercedes' George Russell by 0.082 seconds, while his teammate, Lando Norris, settled for third place.

Charles Leclerc powered to the quickest time ahead of Oscar Piastri in second practice at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on Friday, with Lewis Hamilton fifth and Max Verstappen only seventh. Hamilton's Ferrari teammate Leclerc blasted to a best lap around the Albert Park circuit of one minute 16.439 seconds on soft tyres, 0.124 clear of McLaren's Piastri.

Lando Norris was fastest in practice Friday for the Chinese Grand Prix, the championship leader lapping almost half a second quicker than Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, with McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri third.

Lewis Hamilton said on Thursday he was itching to get going during the "most exciting period of my life" at Ferrari, but cautioned of a transition period as he gets used to a new car. After 12 years with Mercedes, he will race for the first time in the Ferrari red at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix this week, knowing expectations are high.

Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra met Formula 1 chief Stefano Domenicali on Tuesday and said the government would commission a feasibility study into hosting a Grand Prix on a Bangkok street circuit from 2028. Formula 1 already has a crowded schedule of 24 races around the world with four in the Asia-Pacific region, including the Singapore Grand Prix in Southeast Asia.

Formula One champions McLaren have secured Oscar Piastri for the long term after announcing on Wednesday a multi-year contract extension ahead of the 23-year-old driver's home Australian Grand Prix. The news followed similar extensions for chief executive Zak Brown, team principal Andrea Stella, Piastri's teammate Lando Norris and senior staff.
