Max Verstappen kept the 2025 Formula 1 title battle alive with a decisive victory at the Qatar Grand Prix, cutting Lando Norris' championship lead to 12 points and ensuring the fight will be settled in Abu Dhabi. The Red Bull driver capitalized on a crucial McLaren strategy mistake during an early safety car, turning what had looked like an ideal race for Oscar Piastri into a late-season turning point.

Piastri had started from pole and controlled the opening laps, while Verstappen moved past Norris at Turn 1 to settle into second. The race shifted dramatically on lap seven when Nico Hulkenberg and Pierre Gasly collided, triggering a safety car at the exact moment teams could legally complete their first stop under Pirelli's 25-lap stint limit. Every driver except the two McLarens pitted, locking in a two-stop strategy.

McLaren chose track position over the free stop, but the call left both cars vulnerable once the race settled. As the rest of the field completed their lap-32 stops, Piastri and Norris temporarily cycled back to the front, yet they could not escape the pressure behind. Norris struggled to match his teammate's pace, allowing Verstappen to close in before the McLarens made their final stops. When Piastri rejoined after stopping on lap 42, Verstappen had taken control of the race.

Piastri pushed hard to close the gap on fresh hard tyres, but his late charge fell short. "No words," he said over the radio, later adding: "Clearly we didn't get it right tonight... Tried my best but didn't get it done." Verstappen described the outcome simply: "This was an incredible race for us. We made the right call as a team to box... super-happy to win here and stay in the fight."

Norris, who would have sealed the title with a win, admitted the gamble had not paid off. "We made the wrong decision, that was clear as soon as it happened," he said, eventually finishing fourth after passing Kimi Antonelli late in the race.

Carlos Sainz delivered one of the standout drives of the day, securing an unexpected podium for Williams after gaining positions during the pit-stop phases. Behind him, Antonelli took fifth, while George Russell recovered to sixth after early setbacks. Fernando Alonso, Charles Leclerc, Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda completed the top ten.

With Verstappen, Norris, and Piastri all now on seven wins this season, the championship will be decided in Abu Dhabi — with the margin closer than ever.
