In a statement, the organization said it was devastated by the news of Lemieux's passing and extended condolences to his family, friends and the hockey community.
Authorities in Florida confirmed that deputies responded to a reported suicide attempt at a furniture showroom in Lake Park on Thursday. According to reports from The Athletic, the business was owned by Lemieux and his wife.
Tributes quickly poured in following news of his death, including from Geoff Molson, owner and chief executive of Groupe CH, the company that owns the Montreal Canadiens. Molson described Lemieux as a fierce competitor who consistently delivered during important moments and praised his determination, courage and commitment on the ice.
He added that Lemieux represented the spirit of the Canadiens and said the organization was mourning the loss of one of its champions while offering support to his loved ones during a difficult time.
Only days before his death, Lemieux had appeared at the Canadiens' Game 3 playoff matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes, helping energize supporters before the game. Following the announcement of his passing, many fans reflected emotionally on that appearance and shared memories of his impact on the sport.
Born in Buckingham, Quebec, Lemieux entered the NHL after being selected by the Canadiens in the second round of the 1983 NHL Draft. He scored his first NHL goal later that same year and went on to build an accomplished career that included four Stanley Cup titles.
After spending several seasons in Montreal, he later joined the New Jersey Devils ahead of the 1990 season. Throughout his career, Lemieux became known for his intensity, playoff performances and ability to deliver in high-pressure situations.
Internationally, he also represented Canada on several occasions, winning gold at the 1985 World Junior Hockey Championships and contributing to victory in the 1987 Canada Cup.
Following his retirement in 2009, Lemieux reportedly worked as a player agent. He is survived by his wife Deborah and their four children, including professional hockey player Brendan Lemieux.
