The Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics are opening with an ambitious cultural showcase designed to project unity, elegance and international cooperation. Organizers have lined up a star studded program that blends music, fashion and global symbolism, even as geopolitical tensions threaten to complicate the celebratory mood.
Mariah Carey will take the stage at the opening ceremony singing in Italian, a gesture meant to honor the host country and underline the Games’ international spirit. Italian Tunisian rapper Ghali is set to perform in Italian, French and English, reinforcing the idea of cultural crossover. Opera legend Andrea Bocelli will deliver a powerful rendition of Puccini’s Nessun Dorma during the final flag relay, while world renowned Chinese pianist Lang Lang will perform a solo piece. Together, the performances aim to create what organizers describe as a global village atmosphere.
Despite these efforts, the Games are unfolding against a backdrop of rising political and ideological conflict. Tensions escalated ahead of the February 6 to 22 event after United States officials confirmed that ICE agents would be deployed in Italy to protect Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, both expected to attend the opening ceremony. The idea of ICE agents operating near Milan’s San Siro Stadium sparked strong backlash among local officials and residents, particularly following recent killings of US citizens in Minneapolis that intensified sensitivities around policing and violence.
Milan’s leftist mayor Giuseppe Sala made his position clear, stating that ICE agents were not welcome. Italy’s interior minister Matteo Piantedosi attempted to calm
concerns by stressing that ICE would have no external public order function. Still, opposition politicians in Parliament seized on the issue. Senator Ivan Scalfarotto raised pointed questions about who would escort athletes from politically sensitive nations, while others used sarcasm to criticize the government’s cooperation with foreign security forces.
Security concerns extend beyond American involvement. Russian athletes are competing only as Individual Neutral Athletes due to Russia’s ongoing ban following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Thirteen Russian competitors will participate without national colors, a flag or anthem and they will not appear in the opening ceremony. The absence underscores how global conflict continues to shape the Olympic landscape.
Veteran ceremony director Marco Balich has described the opening as a somber affair, though one rich in Italian style. Milan’s role as a global fashion capital will be highlighted through a tribute to legendary designer Giorgio Armani, who died last September at the age of 91. Balich calls the moment deeply emotional, reflecting Armani’s lasting influence on Italian identity and global fashion.
The Milan Cortina Games are also notable for their unprecedented geographic spread. The opening ceremony will unfold across Milan and three Alpine venues Cortina d’Ampezzo Livigno and Predazzo with broadcasts reaching an estimated two billion viewers worldwide. Two Olympic cauldrons will be lit, one in Milan and one in Cortina, symbolizing unity across distance.
Broadcasters have a great deal at stake. NBC and Peacock are giving the Games extensive coverage in the United States, while HBO Max and local networks will stream events across Europe. Warner Bros Discovery executive JB Perrette notes that the Olympics remain one of the few moments when the world truly pauses together.
As athletes prepare to compete, including a record 232 member US team led by Lindsey Vonn and Chloe Kim, organizers remain on high alert. With global tensions running high, Balich emphasizes the deeper purpose behind the spectacle. The Olympics, he says, must use their platform to send a clear message that standing for peace is crucial.
