Chris Froome, one of the most successful cyclists in modern history, has been airlifted to hospital following a severe crash in southern France that left him with multiple injuries. The 40-year-old Briton, a four-time Tour de France champion, sustained five broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and a fractured lumbar vertebrae in the incident near Toulon, approximately 170 kilometers from his home in Monaco.
His Israel-Premier Tech team confirmed that while the crash was serious, Froome was in stable condition and, crucially, did not suffer head injuries. Reports from French media indicated that Froome was conscious upon arrival at the hospital and able to communicate with medical staff. He is scheduled to undergo back surgery, with his season now over as a result of the crash.
No other cyclists were involved in the incident, which occurred during training. For Froome, this marks yet another painful setback in a career already punctuated by injuries. Earlier this year, he broke his collarbone at the UAE Tour in February. Despite the repeated challenges, Froome has maintained his determination to continue competing, although he has hinted that 2025 may mark his final season.
The British cyclist first rose to global prominence in 2013, when he claimed his maiden Tour de France title. His dominance continued with three consecutive victories between 2015 and 2017, placing him among the sport's elite. However, injuries and advancing age have increasingly limited his impact in recent years.
The latest accident raises questions about his ability to stage a meaningful comeback. His contract with Israel-Premier Tech expires at the end of this year, leaving uncertainty over his future in the sport. Yet, Froome has built a reputation on resilience, repeatedly returning from adversity with an unyielding spirit.
