Pope Leo XIV has made history by casting a mail in ballot in the United States midterm elections, becoming the first sitting pope to participate in an American election.

The Chicago born pontiff submitted his ballot in Illinois ahead of the November 3 elections, which will determine which political party controls Congress during the remaining years of President Donald Trump's administration.

The Vatican confirmed the development through a statement from the Holy See Press Office, emphasising the Pope's belief in the importance of democratic participation.

The statement said the Holy Father recognised both the right and responsibility of citizens to take part in democratic processes. It also clarified that Leo had exercised his voting rights whenever eligible, including during his years living in Peru.

According to NBC News, the Pope requested his mail in ballot from the Will County Clerk's Office on October 3. His participation is particularly significant because he is the first American citizen to occupy the Vatican's highest position.

Born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, Leo XIV was elected pope in May 2025, making him the first pontiff from the United States.

His relationship with American politics has attracted considerable attention since his election, particularly following disagreements with the Trump administration over immigration enforcement and the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran.

Tensions between the two intensified in April after the Pope called for peace following American and Israeli strikes on Iran.

Trump publicly criticised the pontiff, saying he did not believe Leo was performing well in his role. The president also questioned the Pope's position on Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Leo subsequently defended his responsibility to promote peace, explaining that the mission of the Catholic Church was to preach the Gospel and encourage peaceful relations.

The Pope's participation in the midterms comes at a politically significant moment for the United States. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and approximately one third of the Senate seats are being contested.

The elections will determine whether Republicans retain control of Congress or Democrats gain the power to challenge the president's legislative agenda.

Opinion polls have indicated that Democrats have opportunities to gain seats in the House, including in areas that strongly supported Trump during the 2024 presidential election. The party has also been seeking additional Senate seats.

Republican officials have responded to the challenging political environment by increasing campaign activities, with Trump holding rallies in states traditionally supportive of his party.

The Pope's vote has drawn attention because of the unusual position he occupies as both a religious leader and an American citizen. His participation does not constitute an endorsement of any political party or candidate, but highlights his stated belief in civic responsibility.

Beyond the political significance, the development marks a rare intersection between the Vatican and American electoral life.

As voters prepare to determine the balance of power in Washington, the participation of the first American pope has added an unexpected historical moment to an already closely watched election season.
