President Donald Trump has criticised Norway in vulgar terms, declaring that Norwegian immigrants are unwelcome in the United States because he was not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Trump made the remarks during a campaign rally on Sunday in Port Huron, Michigan, where he addressed supporters ahead of the crucial US midterm elections scheduled for November 3.

“Frankly, Norway sucks. Norway has become a shithouse country, actually,” he said.

Since returning to the White House in January 2025, Trump has openly expressed his desire to receive the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize.

The award went to South African judge and former United Nations human rights chief Navi Pillay this year, a decision Trump described as “disgraceful and embarrassing”. He has maintained that he should have been the recipient.

During Sunday’s rally, Trump said he would welcome immigrants from certain countries but excluded Norwegians because he had not received the Nobel honour.

“So I don’t want anybody from Norway,” he said.

However, there was no official indication that the United States had introduced or announced any new immigration policy specifically targeting Norwegian nationals.

Norway’s Foreign Minister, Espen Barth Eide, responded to Trump’s comments on Monday, stressing that the Nobel Committee operates independently.

“He knows very well that the Nobel Committee is independent. We have reminded him of that, in case anyone is wondering, and that is still the case,” Eide told Norway’s national broadcaster, NRK.

Trump faced criticism in 2018, during his first term in office, after using similarly vulgar language to describe Haiti and some African countries.
