The Gordon Murray Special Vehicles S1 LM has made history as the most expensive new car ever sold at auction. Created as a clear tribute to the legendary McLaren F1, the S1 LM carries forward the spirit of a car that defined an era. Gordon Murray first shook the automotive world in the nineteen nineties when he penned the McLaren F1, a car that became the fastest road car on the planet and still holds the record as the quickest naturally aspirated production car more than thirty years later.

The S1 LM takes its name from Special One Le Mans. It celebrates the McLaren F1 GTR that shocked the racing world by winning the nineteen ninety five running of the twenty four hours of Le Mans. The anniversary lined up with the launch of Gordon Murray Special Vehicles earlier this year, and the S1 LM quickly became the brand’s signature creation. Only five examples were planned. Four were already spoken for, leaving one final build slot to be auctioned. That final slot went under the hammer with RM Sothebys last week and the result was nothing short of staggering.

The final price reached more than twenty point six million United States dollars. This set a new record for the highest price ever paid for a brand new car at auction. It even edged past the previous auction high for a McLaren F1 set in twenty twenty one. Adjusted for inflation, that earlier car would be worth even more today, yet the S1 LM still managed to claim the title for the most valuable new car sold at public auction. It did not surpass the all time price for any car, a title that belongs to the Rolls Royce La Rose Noire Droptail which carries a reported price tag of around thirty two million United States dollars, but the achievement remains significant.

The winning buyer now has a rare opportunity. They will work directly with Gordon Murray to personalise their car. They will also join development drives with GMA test driver Dario Franchitti, a three time winner of the Indy five hundred and a four time IndyCar Series champion. This level of involvement adds another layer of exclusivity to a car that is already rare and historically meaningful.

The mechanical heart of the S1 LM is a Cosworth built four point three litre V twelve engine that produces five hundred and thirty kilowatts. It screams all the way to a twelve thousand one hundred rpm redline and sends its power to the rear wheels through a six speed manual transmission. The car is based on the GMA T fifty chassis and keeps the famous three seat layout seen in both the T fifty and the McLaren F1. Carbon fibre construction inside and out keeps the weight under one thousand kilograms which reinforces the focus on purity and performance.

Gordon Murray called the result a defining moment. He described the S1 LM as the sum of everything he has learned across six decades of design. The car stands as both a tribute to the past and a statement of what modern engineering can achieve when guided by a clear vision.

The S1 LM is more than a homage. It is proof that the legacy of the McLaren F1 still inspires record breaking passion today.
