A 29-year-old man has been arrested in Florida on suspicion of starting the devastating Pacific Palisades fire in Los Angeles that killed 12 people and destroyed thousands of homes earlier this year.

Federal prosecutors allege that Jonathan Rinderknecht intentionally ignited a small blaze near the Skull Rock Trailhead in the early hours of New Year's Day, which later reignited into the catastrophic Palisades Fire on January 7. The inferno scorched more than 23,000 acres, wiped out over 6,800 structures, and caused an estimated $150 billion in damage, making it one of the most destructive wildfires in Los Angeles history.

According to investigators, Rinderknecht, a former resident of Pacific Palisades who had relocated to Florida, had been working as an Uber driver on New Year's Eve. After completing a ride, he allegedly walked up a nearby trail, took iPhone videos of the view, and listened to a rap song showing "objects being lit on fire" before sparking the blaze with an open flame.

Investigators later discovered digital evidence linking him to the fire, including a ChatGPT-generated image of a burning city and a "dystopian painting showing in part a burning forest and a crowd fleeing from it." They also found that months before the fire, he had typed prompts describing wealthy people "watching the world burn down" and wrote, "I literally burnt the Bible that I had. It felt amazing."

Bill Essayli, the acting U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, announced the arrest, saying, "The arrest, we hope, will offer a measure of justice to all those impacted." He added, "While we cannot undo the damage and destruction that was done, we hope his arrest and the charges against him bring some measure of justice to the victims of this horrific tragedy."

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) led the investigation, collecting more than 13,000 pieces of evidence and conducting hundreds of interviews. Los Angeles Fire Chief Ronnie Villanueva said, "This action was deliberate, intended to cause devastating harm to the City of Los Angeles. This arrest is a critical step toward ensuring accountability, justice, and healing for our city."

Rinderknecht faces federal charges of destruction of property by means of fire and could serve up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
