Aziz Ansari is beginning a new chapter in his life. The fact that he has avoided the spotlight in recent years does not, however, imply that he has forgotten the circumstances that led to his quiet retreat. In 2018, a woman going by the name of "Grace" wrote an article in which she claimed that after spending a night out with the Master of None star, she was coerced into having sex.
Although Aziz had previously addressed the accusation in a statement at the time, saying that he was "surprised and concerned" because he believed their interactions had been "completely consensual," he is now explaining why he didn't publicly confront his accuser directly in his 2019 comedy special Aziz Ansari: Right Now.
“I mean, I apologized to the person personally, right? When it happened,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in a feature published Sept. 3. “I did that tour, and I wanted to address it in the special because people were curious about how I felt about the whole experience. So, I felt like I had to talk about it in the special.”
The Park and Rec alumnus, who married forensic data scientist Serena Skov Campbell in 2022, gave some details about his personal life in the comedy special the year after the article.
He said to the crowd at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, "There were moments when I felt afraid, embarrassed, and humiliated, and at the end of the day, I just felt awful that this person felt this way." One of my friends said to me, "You know what, man?" and I can't help but think of that conversation. I thought about every date I've ever gone on because of the entire situation. And I exclaimed, "Wow!" That is quite amazing.
"If this made other people more thoughtful, as well as myself," he continued, "that's a good thing, and that’s how I feel about it.”
Seven years later, Aziz's most significant acting comeback is almost here: Good Fortune, the film he wrote, directed, and starred in, will open on October 17.
However, the 42-year-old is cautious when discussing his break from public-facing endeavors. He stated, "It wasn't really a break, per se," to The Hollywood Reporter.
Regardless of whether it was a break or not, Aziz took deliberate time off, particularly in the year immediately following the article.
At Aziz Ansari: Right Now, he stated, "I hope it was a step forward." It caused me to reflect a lot, and I hope that I have improved as a person.
