JoJo Siwa never expected to fall for a man, but her relationship with Chris Hughes has made her rethink what she thought she knew about her own sexuality.
The 23-year-old singer and dancer opened up about her unexpected romance with the Love Island alum during an appearance on the Wildmen podcast, explaining that she had spent years feeling no romantic or physical attraction toward men.
"I've always been grossed out by dudes," Siwa told hosts Dylan Sprouse and Brendan Columbus.
That changed after she met Hughes while they were both contestants on Celebrity Big Brother U.K. in 2025. Although Siwa initially viewed him as another friend, she eventually noticed something different about the way she felt around him.
"Once I realized that I wasn't grossed out by the thought of him being a boy, I was like, 'Whoa,'" she recalled.
Siwa said the realization caught her off guard because she had never experienced that kind of attraction toward any of her male friends, even those she considered conventionally attractive.
"With Chris... it actually was fascinating because I physically thought I would never be with a dude, ever," she explained. "I just never thought it was possible."
Before entering the Celebrity Big Brother house, Siwa had been dating Kath Ebbs and identified as a lesbian. During the reality show, however, she began describing herself as queer, continuing a longer journey of figuring out how she wanted to describe her sexuality.
She previously said she had felt pressure to put a specific label on her identity, at one point identifying as pansexual before using lesbian and gay labels.
Now, Siwa says she is more comfortable with the broader terms queer or pansexual.
"I just am the umbrella term of queer or pansexual," she said. "Because yeah, I fell in love with a boy. Here we are."
Despite being in a relationship with Hughes, Siwa is also not ruling out ever dating a woman again. She explained that questions about whether she would choose men or women in the future are difficult to answer because her experience with Hughes challenged assumptions she once considered certain.
She acknowledged that there are old interviews in which she confidently said she would never date a man. Today, her perspective is very different.
"I'm head over heels in love with one," she said.
