Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White strongly criticized officiating after Caitlin Clark exited Wednesday night's game against the Phoenix Mercury with a back issue and did not return.
Clark left the contest during the third quarter of Indiana's 111-109 defeat at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Following the game, White voiced frustration over several incidents involving the Fever star, arguing that officials failed to properly address what she described as excessive physical play.
One particular sequence drew White's attention after she reviewed footage that appeared to show Mercury veteran Alyssa Thomas making contact with Clark's neck area while Clark was on the floor. White said the play was serious and questioned why it was not penalized during the game.
The coach explained that she had already raised concerns with officials at halftime and expressed frustration over what she viewed as inconsistent foul calls throughout the contest. White pointed to a significant disparity in fouls called during the fourth quarter and suggested the officiating lacked balance.
Speaking after the loss, White emphasized Clark's importance to both the Fever and the WNBA, describing her as a generational talent and one of the league's biggest stars. She argued that several actions directed toward Clark should have resulted in penalties and said the lack of calls was unacceptable.
White also criticized another play involving Clark's three-point attempt. The coach believed a defender failed to provide Clark with adequate landing space after the shot, creating a potentially dangerous situation. Although officials reviewed the play, the foul was not upgraded beyond a common foul.
The WNBA has rules designed to protect shooters from landing on defenders' feet, similar to standards adopted by the NBA after injuries caused by unsafe closeouts. White argued that the reviewed play met the criteria for a more severe penalty and expressed disbelief that officials did not reach that conclusion.
She further described the contact involving Clark's neck as dangerous and said repeated incidents of this nature have become increasingly frustrating. According to White, concerns about officiating consistency have existed for some time.
The Fever coach revealed that she spent part of the offseason studying league officiating trends and continues to believe consistency remains a major issue. White argued that Clark is often officiated differently from other players around the league.
Indiana will now look to move forward from the narrow defeat when it hosts the Los Angeles Sparks in its next game on June 27.
