Amazon MGM Studios has officially announced the release date for Melania, a high-profile documentary centered on former First Lady Melania Trump. The film is set to premiere exclusively in theaters on January 30, 2026, before streaming globally on Prime Video.
The announcement has already stirred debate across political and cultural lines, with reactions reflecting the divisive nature of its subject. Melania promises an inside look at one of the most enigmatic figures in modern American politics — a woman often seen but rarely heard.
Directed by Brett Ratner, best known for the Rush Hour franchise, the project marks the filmmaker’s return to Hollywood after years away from the spotlight. Ratner’s career came to an abrupt halt in 2017 following multiple allegations of sexual misconduct reported by the Los Angeles Times. He has consistently denied the claims, but the controversy led Warner Bros. to cut ties with him.
Despite Ratner’s complicated history, Amazon reportedly paid $40 million for the rights to Melania — an extraordinary figure for a documentary. The move underscores the streaming giant’s confidence in the project’s commercial and cultural potential.
According to Amazon MGM Studios, Melania offers “unprecedented access to the 20 days leading up to the 2025 Presidential Inauguration — through the eyes of the First Lady-elect herself.” The film is said to provide a rare glimpse into Melania Trump’s personal world as she oversees inauguration planning, manages the White House transition, and steps back into public life alongside her husband, former President Donald Trump.
A first-look image released by Amazon shows Melania gazing pensively out the window of an SUV at a tarmac, a visual that captures the tone of quiet power and isolation often associated with her public persona.
The studio says the film includes exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, featuring “critical meetings” and “private conversations,” offering viewers an intimate portrait of the woman who has remained one of America’s most mysterious First Ladies.
Adding to the scope of the project, Amazon MGM also announced an accompanying three-part docuseries. The series will follow Melania’s movements between Trump Tower in New York, Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, and Washington, D.C., during the tense and transformative weeks surrounding her husband’s return to power after his 2024 election victory.
Notably, Melania was produced with the active participation of Melania Trump herself, who also serves as one of the film’s producers — a fact that ensures both authenticity and, inevitably, a degree of narrative control.
The project’s scale, subject, and price tag make it one of the most talked-about political documentaries in recent memory. Whether it becomes a sympathetic portrait or a lightning rod for renewed controversy, Melania is certain to command attention when it arrives in theaters early next year.
