Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's marriage has officially come to an end after nearly two decades together. People confirmed the split on Monday, Sept. 29, just three months after the couple celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary.
While the news shocked many fans, a source close to Urban says their separation "really hasn't been a secret" among friends.
"They've been living separately for a while now," the insider reveals, adding, "People close to Keith felt like the split was kind of inevitable."
Kidman, 58, and Urban, 57, married in 2006 and share two daughters, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14. The couple was last photographed together in June at a FIFA Club World Cup match in Nashville.
Just days later, Kidman shared a heartfelt anniversary tribute on Instagram, posting a black-and-white photo of her cuddled up to Urban with the caption: "Happy Anniversary Baby ❤️ @KeithUrban."
Sources tell PEOPLE the actress leaned heavily on her family throughout the summer as Urban toured the world with his High and Alive tour. Kidman spent time in London filming Practical Magic 2, while their daughters stayed close by.
"Her sister Antonia has been a rock," the source says. "Nicole didn't want this. She was fighting to save the marriage."
The separation comes after months of speculation, with insiders noting that the couple's demanding schedules had kept them apart. Reports surfaced in September that Kidman was renting a London home while Urban quietly acquired his own residence in Nashville.
The pair's romance began in 2005, with Urban famously recalling how nervous he was to call Kidman after first meeting her. They tied the knot a year later in Sydney. Over the years, they've spoken openly about the effort it takes to maintain a strong relationship.
In April 2024, Urban gave a touching tribute to Kidman at the AFI Life Achievement Award Gala, calling her "a real-life princess" and praising her heart and spirit.
Now, their focus remains on co-parenting their daughters while navigating life apart, a bittersweet ending to one of Hollywood's most admired love stories.
