Jose Mourinho’s tenure at Fenerbahce has come to an end after just over a year, with the club officially announcing his departure following their recent Champions League play-off exit to Benfica. The Portuguese coach, aged 62, was thanked for his efforts in a club statement that confirmed the two sides had “parted ways.” Mourinho, who has managed ten clubs including Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham, guided Fenerbahce to second place in the league during his only season, but his time was characterized by several controversies.

SL Benfica qualified for a 15th UEFA Champions League (UCL) main draw in 16 years by defeating Fenerbahçe SK 1-0 in their play-off second leg at Estádio da Luz, with Kerem Aktürkoğlu’s first-half strike the only goal across the two legs. Although both hugely successful sides, their polarising recent records in the UCL – whereFenerbahçe last made an appearance in the group stage 17 years ago – showed that it could be a difficult away day for the Canaries, and that’s certainly how it played out in the opening stages.
