French football superstar Kylian Mbappe found himself at the centre of an international controversy after comments about an internet meme triggered widespread criticism in China, prompting corporate withdrawals, official condemnation and apologies from some of football's biggest names.

The controversy emerged on Monday night as Mbappe attended the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London. A clip circulated on Chinese social media showing the Real Madrid forward discussing an online meme that reportedly makes him laugh. The image featured his face superimposed onto a depiction resembling former Chinese leader Mao Zedong.

The joke quickly generated anger among Chinese internet users, with critics arguing that the comparison was offensive because of Mao's historical and political significance in the country.

The reaction escalated rapidly. Several Chinese brands reportedly distanced themselves from the footballer, while China Media Group, the parent organisation of state broadcaster CCTV, suspended broadcasts of Spanish La Liga matches.

A spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry said comments and actions that hurt the feelings of Chinese people would naturally attract opposition across society.

However, the controversy developed in an unusual online environment. China's tightly controlled internet restricts access to numerous international platforms and limits discussions involving politically sensitive subjects. As a result, many users were expressing outrage without clearly identifying the original joke or directly mentioning Mao.

Some social media users attempted to understand the controversy through artificial intelligence chatbots, but these services were also unable to provide unrestricted explanations. Others shared screenshots of the meme with references blurred or obscured.

Despite the confusion, the backlash continued to grow. One widely circulated Weibo comment argued that an apology was insufficient and called for Mbappe to be banned from the country.

Another described Mao as a spiritual pillar of the Chinese people, reflecting the sensitivity surrounding his image and historical legacy.

Mao led the Chinese Communist Party to victory in the civil war and founded the People's Republic of China in 1949. His leadership remains a significant part of the country's national identity, although his rule also included the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution, periods associated with widespread suffering, famine and political persecution.

Mbappe eventually issued an apology, describing his remarks as ill judged and expressing sincere regret. Real Madrid and La Liga also released apologies as the controversy threatened their commercial and broadcasting relationships in China.

Beijing later confirmed that it was taking the footballer's apology seriously, although China Media Group had not announced whether suspended broadcasts would resume.

Reactions outside mainland China were considerably different. Some Chinese diaspora communities and critics of the Communist Party defended Mbappe, arguing that criticism of historical political figures should not automatically be considered offensive.

Others questioned why the controversy had become so difficult to discuss openly.

The incident highlights the complicated relationship between international celebrities, commercial interests and politically sensitive cultural issues. For Mbappe, whose global popularity extends far beyond football, the episode demonstrates how an apparently casual online joke can quickly develop into a diplomatic and commercial challenge.
