Eddie Howe has stepped down as Newcastle United head coach, bringing an end to a successful spell that lasted nearly five years. The 48-year-old leaves St James' Park after a difficult campaign in which the Magpies finished 12th in the Premier League and missed out on qualification for European competition.
In a statement, Howe said the decision came after careful personal reflection. He explained that after dedicating himself fully to the club, he believes the time has come to take a break and recharge.
"After nearly five years of giving my life, heart and soul into the club with unrelenting energy, I feel that it is in the best interests of both myself and the club to step away," Howe said. He added that although the decision was difficult, he believes it is the right one and described managing Newcastle as the privilege of his lifetime.
Newcastle confirmed that the search for Howe's successor is already at an advanced stage, with reports linking German coach Matthias Jaissle to the role.
Howe arrived at Newcastle in November 2021 and quickly transformed the club's fortunes. He guided the Magpies away from a relegation battle during his first season before leading them to Champions League qualification in the 2022-23 campaign. Newcastle returned to Europe's top competition again in 2024-25 and celebrated their first domestic trophy in 70 years by lifting the Carabao Cup.
Last season, Newcastle reached the Champions League knockout stage for the first time before being eliminated by Barcelona in the round of 16. However, inconsistent league form saw the club lose 17 of its 38 Premier League matches, resulting in a disappointing finish outside the European qualification places.
Howe reflected fondly on his time at the club, highlighting the memorable Champions League nights at St James' Park and the unity that helped Newcastle achieve rapid progress.
His departure also marks the exit of assistant coaches Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone, along with head of performance Dan Hodges.
Howe's final match in charge was a 4-1 pre-season defeat to Bristol City. Newcastle also faces a challenging summer after losing key midfielder Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and Anthony Gordon to Barcelona. Club captain Bruno Guimaraes has also been linked with a move to Arsenal.
Despite leaving, Howe expressed confidence in Newcastle's future, praising the club's leadership and saying he believes the team will continue to achieve success. Chief executive David Hopkinson thanked Howe and his staff for their commitment, saying they leave with the respect and gratitude of everyone connected with the club.
