Dominik Szoboszlai has committed his future to Liverpool by signing a new five-year contract that will keep him at Anfield until 2031. The agreement ends months of speculation over the Hungarian midfielder's future and reinforces the club's long-term plans under new head coach Andoni Iraola.
The 25-year-old joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2023 in a £60 million move and has quickly established himself as one of the team's most influential players. Last season, he enjoyed an outstanding campaign, scoring 13 goals and providing 12 assists to earn Liverpool's Player of the Season award despite the club enduring a disappointing 2025-26 campaign.
Speaking after signing his new deal, Szoboszlai made it clear that his ambitions remain unchanged. He said he is never satisfied with what he has achieved and wants to continue setting an example for his teammates. The Hungary captain also reiterated his desire to win every major trophy available, including the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.
Szoboszlai still had two years remaining on his previous contract, but Liverpool moved to secure his long-term future following extensive negotiations between his representatives and sporting director Richard Hughes. Discussions gathered momentum in recent weeks before both parties reached an agreement that reflects the belief that the midfielder's best years are still ahead of him.
His growing importance to the club has also strengthened his chances of becoming Liverpool's next vice-captain. With Andy Robertson leaving the club this summer and several experienced figures departing, Szoboszlai is viewed as one of the natural leadership candidates. He already captains the Hungarian national team and has earned praise for his maturity and influence on and off the pitch.
Former Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, who departed Anfield at the end of last season, described Szoboszlai earlier this year as one of the best players in the world. Previous head coach Arne Slot also highlighted the midfielder's leadership qualities, although he believed there was still room for him to become more vocal in the dressing room alongside senior figures such as Virgil van Dijk.
Liverpool see Szoboszlai as a cornerstone of their future after losing several key players in recent transfer windows. His decision to extend his stay provides stability during a period of transition and signals the club's determination to retain its top talent. Szoboszlai has already returned to Merseyside for pre-season training and will travel with the squad to the United States as preparations for the new campaign continue.
