Julio Enciso was overcome with emotion after helping Paraguay secure a dramatic place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, dedicating the memorable victory to his late grandfather during a heartfelt post match interview.

Paraguay defeated Germany in the Round of 32 on Monday, June 29, advancing after a tense 4-3 penalty shootout. Enciso scored his side's only goal during regulation before becoming emotional while reflecting on the achievement.

Speaking to reporters, Enciso revealed that thoughts of his grandfather filled his mind after the final whistle. Fighting back tears, he said he remembered watching Paraguay's national team together with him and wished he could have shared the historic moment.

"I remember sitting next to my grandpa. I dedicate this to him. I'm sure he would be proud of me," Enciso said.

The 21 year old described the victory as both a blessing and a tribute to the man who helped nurture his love for football. Looking back on the memories they shared, he said Paraguay's remarkable triumph felt like a gift from both God and his grandfather.

Enciso also expressed his joy for supporters across the country, calling it the greatest day of his life. He said he hoped the result brought the same happiness to every Paraguayan celebrating the team's success.

Following the emotional tribute, the forward praised his teammates for their resilience throughout the match. Although he was substituted before the final whistle, Enciso said the squad's determination and unity carried them through one of the tournament's most dramatic contests.

He concluded his interview by sending a heartfelt message to his grandfather, saying he was blowing him a kiss in heaven.

The emotional scenes quickly resonated with football fans on social media, with many praising Enciso's performance and touching tribute. One supporter described it as the kind of unforgettable moment that makes the World Cup so special.

Enciso also celebrated the victory with his wife, influencer Melissa Cardona. After the final whistle, the Paraguay star ran to the stands where the couple embraced and shared a celebratory kiss. Cardona later reposted the moment on her Instagram Story alongside additional photos from the match.

The couple married on May 29, 2025, at Enciso's family home in Caaguazú, Paraguay.

Paraguay will now turn its attention to the Round of 16, where it will face the winner of the clash between France and Sweden on July 4 in Philadelphia.
