Roberto De Zerbi has issued an apology to Tottenham supporters after remarks he previously made about Mason Greenwood sparked criticism among fan groups following his appointment as head coach.

De Zerbi's comments, made during his time at Marseille, were viewed by some supporters as insensitive given the context of Greenwood's past. Greenwood had faced charges in 2022 including attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Those charges were later dropped in 2023 after the Crown Prosecution Service determined there was no realistic prospect of conviction due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and new information emerging.

Addressing the issue through the Tottenham website, De Zerbi stressed that he had never intended to minimise the seriousness of violence against women or any form of abuse. He stated that throughout his career he has aimed to support and protect those who are vulnerable, adding that he has consistently taken positions aligned with that principle. He also described himself as someone who does not compromise his values for sporting success.

The Italian coach expressed regret that his earlier comments may have caused offence. He noted that, as a father, he is particularly sensitive to issues involving safety and respect, and said he has always been mindful of such matters. He added that he hopes supporters will come to better understand his intentions over time and recognise that he did not mean to take a stance that would be perceived negatively.

De Zerbi's remarks had previously drawn criticism from sections of the Tottenham fanbase, who felt his characterisation of Greenwood was inappropriate. Some supporters described the comments as poorly judged and offensive, particularly given the seriousness of the allegations involved at the time.

Since then, Greenwood has continued his career abroad, first joining Getafe on loan before moving to Marseille in a high profile transfer. He has since delivered strong performances on the pitch, contributing a significant number of goals for the French club.

De Zerbi now focuses on his role at Tottenham, where he has taken charge during a challenging period for the club. He has expressed confidence in the squad and reiterated his long term commitment, stating that he views the position as one of the most significant challenges of his career and remains determined to help the team improve.
