Travis Kelce appears increasingly likely to return for another NFL season, but whether that comeback happens in Kansas City remains an open question.
The veteran tight end, who has spent his entire professional career with the Chiefs, is approaching free agency after his contract expired at the end of the 2025 season.
League insiders say Kelce is motivated to play a 14th year, though multiple teams are believed to have interest if he ultimately explores the market.
For now, Kansas City remains firmly in the conversation about where the future Hall of Famer might land.
Team officials still value Kelce's leadership and production, especially after a frustrating 2025 campaign that ended without a playoff appearance.
Financial realities, however, could complicate negotiations.
The Chiefs have committed significant salary-cap space to several long-term deals in recent years, leaving less flexibility than usual when dealing with veteran free agents.
Because of that situation, some around the league believe a short extension structure could make the most sense.
A two-year agreement with a sizable signing bonus would allow Kansas City to keep Kelce while spreading the financial impact over multiple seasons.
Such an arrangement could also protect the team if the veteran eventually decides to retire.
Kelce has repeatedly said his decision will depend on how his body feels after the offseason and whether he believes he can still contribute at a high level.
He finished last season with 76 receptions for 851 yards and five touchdowns.
Even after more than a decade in the league, his presence remains central to the identity of Kansas City's offense.
With free agency about to open, clarity on Kelce's future may arrive sooner rather than later.
Until then, the possibility of the star tight end wearing another uniform, however unlikely it once seemed, is at least part of the conversation across the league.
Still, many around the organization expect that if Kelce does play in 2026, Kansas City will ultimately find a way to bring one of the franchise's most accomplished players back for another memorable season with familiar teammates again.
