Palmeiras secured a win over Al Ahly at the FIFA Club World Cup after a dramatic interruption due to severe weather at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Referee Anthony Taylor was forced to halt the game in the 62nd minute as threatening dark clouds gathered, bringing with them the risk of a lightning storm. Temperatures had already reached 31°C earlier, prompting a first-half cooling break. A stadium announcement advised fans to leave the seating area and seek shelter indoors due to the weather threat.

Despite the disruption, Palmeiras managed to take control of the game. They broke the deadlock early in the second half when Al Ahly defender Achraf Dari mistakenly headed a free-kick into his own net. That goal ended a long goal drought in Group A, coming after 257 minutes of action without a single score. The Brazilian side quickly built on their lead, with substitute Jose Lopez doubling the advantage just ten minutes later. Lopez had earlier missed a clear chance shortly after coming on, but made up for it with a composed finish on a counter-attack.

Palmeiras had previously been given a lifeline when midfielder Raphael Veiga had a red card overturned. Initially sent off for a high and reckless challenge on Zizo, the decision was reviewed by Taylor on the pitchside monitor. He ultimately downgraded the punishment to a yellow card, stating that the contact was low on the foot and Veiga had not gone in two-footed.

Among the standout performers was former Aston Villa winger Trezeguet, who looked lively for Al Ahly. The Egyptian international caused problems for Palmeiras right-back Agustin Giay, although he struggled for support and was often crowded out. For Palmeiras, young winger Estevao Willian showed early promise with a dazzling run but failed to maintain that influence throughout the game. The 18-year-old is set to join Chelsea after the tournament, and has been highly praised by Palmeiras' academy chief.

The midday kickoff and extreme weather conditions were key talking points, affecting players' performance and increasing injury risk. Palmeiras now sit in a strong position with four points from two matches. Their final group game is against Inter Miami in Florida, while Al Ahly will face Porto in New Jersey.
