The American, a two time major winner and the 2024 champion, delivered a flawless round at Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston. She avoided any bogeys and showed strong control throughout, even as conditions became more challenging. Korda said the wind picked up at times, particularly through the trees, which required careful judgment on distances. Despite that, she felt confident in her performance from start to finish.
Close behind her are Somi Lee and Patty Tavatanakit, who both finished their opening rounds at five under par. Tavatanakit, who previously won the tournament in 2021 when it was held in California, is once again in contention early in the competition.
France's Pauline Bouchard, China's Yan Liu, Japan's Yuna Yoshida, and American Farah O'Keefe are among those tied on four under par, forming a competitive group just behind the leaders.
England's Mimi Rhodes made a strong impression on her tournament debut. The 24 year old, who enjoyed a successful season on the Ladies European Tour last year with three wins, carded a three under 69. Her round included five birdies and two bogeys, leaving her four shots behind Korda and tied with several others.
Rhodes said she felt well prepared heading into the event, having arrived early enough to familiarize herself with the course. She added that her focus was on staying confident throughout the round, which she believed helped her deliver a solid performance.
Elsewhere, England's Charley Hull finished on level par after recording three birdies and three bogeys. Meanwhile, world number one Jeeno Thitikul endured a tougher start, posting a two over 74 that leaves her nine shots off the lead after the first round.
With several contenders within reach, the tournament remains wide open heading into the next stages.
