The two cricketing rivals are scheduled to meet on October 10 at Johannesburg's Wanderers Stadium, which has a seating capacity of approximately 34,000 spectators. The overwhelming demand highlights the global appeal of one of cricket's biggest sporting rivalries, with millions of supporters hoping to secure a place at the fixture.
The Wanderers Stadium will also host the tournament's final on November 21, with ticket applications for the championship match approaching eight million. The venue is therefore expected to be one of the major attractions throughout the competition.
The 2027 edition will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, with the tournament scheduled to begin on October 7. The opening match will feature a rematch of the 2023 World Cup final, which saw Australia defeat India in Ahmedabad to claim the trophy.
Despite the enormous anticipation surrounding India and Pakistan's meeting, recent encounters between the two sides have largely favoured India. The Indian team has won their last nine meetings against Pakistan, underlining its dominance in the rivalry.
Pakistan's most recent victory over India came during the 2022 Asia Cup, leaving the team with an opportunity to end its losing streak when the sides meet in Johannesburg next year.
The two teams have been placed in the same group alongside Australia, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and one qualifying nation. The other group features England, hosts South Africa, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and another team that will earn its place through the qualification process.
The tournament will follow a two-stage format before the knockout rounds. The top three teams from each group, alongside the best-performing fourth-placed team across both groups, will advance to the Super 7 stage.
Following that round, the four highest-ranked teams will progress to the semi-finals, with the winners meeting in the final on November 21.
With millions of applications already recorded for the India-Pakistan fixture, the match is expected to be among the biggest highlights of the 2027 tournament, both in terms of attendance demand and worldwide viewership.
