Caitlin Clark will miss the Indiana Fever's game against the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday as she continues to recover from a lingering back injury.
Fever head coach Stephanie White confirmed the decision on Friday, saying the team's priority is ensuring Clark's long-term health.
The rookie star was forced to leave Wednesday's 111-109 defeat to the Phoenix Mercury during the third quarter after experiencing discomfort in her back. The injury has troubled Clark throughout the season, causing her to miss a game on May 20 while also appearing on the injury report as probable for several other contests.
White reassured reporters that Clark is doing well but said it remains unclear whether she will be available for future games.
"She's OK," White said, while noting that there is no timetable yet for her return beyond Saturday's absence.
The coach added that the timing of the injury could work in Clark's favour, as Indiana will have a week-long break after facing Los Angeles. The Fever's next game is scheduled for July 5 against the Las Vegas Aces, giving the 23-year-old additional time to receive treatment and recover.
"Her long-term health and wellness is the most important," White said.
Clark has enjoyed an outstanding season despite dealing with recurring physical setbacks. After injuries restricted her to just 13 appearances last year, she has returned in impressive form and is producing the best numbers of her career.
Through 17 games this season, Clark is averaging 21.2 points, 8.2 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game, establishing herself as one of the league's most influential players.
Her absence will be a significant blow for Indiana as the team looks to bounce back from Wednesday's narrow defeat. Clark has been the driving force behind the Fever's offence, contributing both as a scorer and playmaker throughout the campaign.
The team will now hope the additional recovery period allows its star guard to fully address the back issue before returning to action. With a demanding schedule still ahead, Indiana is taking a cautious approach to avoid aggravating the injury and to ensure Clark is fit for the remainder of the season.
