Former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers is retiring from Harvard University following a review of his past ties to Jeffrey Epstein. Summers will step down as co-director of the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government and relinquish all other academic and faculty positions. This move follows the resignation of Nobel Prize-winner Richard Axel from Columbia University over similar links to the convicted sex offender.

The justice department has released millions of documents from its investigation into the convicted paedophile, who died in a New York jail in 2019.

Surveillance of a romantic partner helped put the Mexican armed forces on the trail of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the notorious leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel known as “El Mencho,” who was captured and killed Sunday, Mexican authorities said Monday.

Mexican Defense Secretary Gen. Ricardo Trevilla said that Sunday’s Mexican special forces operation, which included U.S. intelligence information, ended when special forces found Oseguera Cervantes “hidden in the undergrowth” in his home state of Jalisco. After several shootouts, eight gunmen were killed and the drug lord and two of his bodyguards were wounded. They were taken into custody and died on the way to Mexico City, Trevilla said.

Cindy McCain announced on Thursday that she is resigning as executive director of the World Food Programme (WFP) due to health issues. McCain, 71, stated that her health has not recovered enough to meet the "enormous demands" of the position, which oversees food aid for over 100 million people. She described her tenure at the humanitarian organization as the "honor of a lifetime.”

The widow of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., she made the decision experiencing in October what her office described as a mild stroke. She resumed her role after weeks of recuperation.

In a video posted to X, McCain addressed her agency's staff and said "my doctors and my family want me to come home," adding that she has not yet recovered.

"I’ve seen firsthand WFP’s ability to save lives in the most dangerous, destitute, and remote locations of the world, where people need us the most," McCain said in a statement. "Time and time again, I have seen the WFP team show up where no one else can, no matter the odds.”

Millions of people in New York City and a large swath of the northeastern U.S. were stuck at home under road travel bans and blizzard warnings Monday as heavy snow and strong winds intensified, creating whiteout conditions in the densely populated region.

Snow fell at a rate of 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.6 centimeters) an hour early Monday from New York through Massachusetts. Some areas have gotten well over a foot (30 centimeters) of snow since Sunday, along with wind gusts of over 30 mph (48 kph) and low visibility.
