An explosion at an explosives manufacturing plant near Curitiba, in southern Brazil's Paraná state, has killed six men and three women, according to emergency officials. The incident occurred early Tuesday morning in Quatro Barras, where employees of Enaex, a company producing civilian-use explosives for mining and construction, were on shift.

The blast, which struck just before 6 a.m. local time, was powerful enough to wake residents miles away. Fire department officials reported that within a 1.5-kilometer radius, houses suffered broken windows, structural damage, and shockwave impact. The explosion created a crater at the plant, underscoring the force of the detonation.

In the immediate aftermath, rescue teams, including sniffer dogs, searched for missing workers. Despite their efforts, Paraná's security minister later confirmed there was no hope of finding survivors among the nine unaccounted for. Seven others sustained injuries, adding to the tragedy's toll.

Enaex, which has operated at the site for five decades with all required licenses, expressed condolences to victims' families and pledged full cooperation with authorities to determine the cause. While the exact trigger remains unknown, investigators are examining all possibilities, including potential equipment malfunction or procedural failure.

Residents described being startled from sleep by the deafening blast. For many, the shock was compounded by the knowledge that the factory, despite its long presence in the area, had never experienced an incident of such magnitude. Some community members now voice concerns over industrial safety in populated areas, calling for a review of emergency protocols.

Officials stress that accidents in the explosives industry, while rare, demand rigorous safety oversight. This tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the inherent risks in manufacturing volatile materials and the need for preventive measures. As families mourn and investigations continue, the blast at Quatro Barras stands as one of Paraná's most devastating industrial accidents in recent memory, leaving a scar both physical and emotional on the surrounding community.
