The 2026 Grammy nominations dropped Thursday morning, and two familiar names were missing from the list, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé.

Both artists have dominated the Grammys for over a decade, but neither made the cut this time. Their absence, though not a snub, reflects how the Recording Academy's timeline and shifting industry dynamics intersected this year.

Taylor Swift's latest studio project, The Life of a Showgirl, was released in October 2025, more than a month after the Recording Academy's eligibility window closed on September 30. That cutoff determines which albums can compete in a given year, meaning Swift's record-shattering release will instead qualify for the 2027 Grammys.

Beyoncé, meanwhile, has already enjoyed her Grammy spotlight. Her country-inspired opus Cowboy Carter dominated last year's awards, earning 11 nominations and making her the first Black woman to win Best Country Album. Since it dropped back in March 2024, the album had already run its Grammy course, leaving Queen B to sit out this round.

This year's field belongs to other heavy hitters. Kendrick Lamar leads all artists with nine nominations for GNX, followed closely by Lady Gaga with seven for Mayhem. Bad Bunny continues his global streak with six, while Doechii, Tyler the Creator, and Leon Thomas each scored multiple nods across top categories.

The nominations also saw unexpected firsts, including Dune actor Timothée Chalamet's debut nod for his work on the A Complete Unknown soundtrack.

Still, even with fresh faces and powerhouse veterans, the conversation circles back to Swift and Beyoncé, two women whose absence feels almost unnatural at music's biggest night.

The 68th annual Grammy Awards will air live from Los Angeles' Crypto.com Arena on February 1, 2026. And while Swift and Beyoncé may be missing this season, don't count them out for long. If history proves anything, next year's Grammys could very well belong to them again.
