Kimi Antonelli strengthened his grip on the 2026 Formula 1 championship with another victory at the Spanish Grand Prix, while Lando Norris was left frustrated after a badly timed Virtual Safety Car destroyed his chances of winning.
Antonelli took the chequered flag ahead of Max Verstappen and Norris at Madrid's new Madring circuit, securing his eighth victory of the season.
Norris started from pole and initially looked comfortable at the front. Antonelli repeatedly challenged the McLaren driver during the opening laps, but twice ran off track while attempting overtakes and had to give back the position.
The race appeared to be settling into Norris' favour as he began pulling away. That changed when Lance Stroll stopped with brake problems on Lap 15, triggering a Virtual Safety Car.
The timing could not have been worse for Norris. He had already passed the pit entry when the caution was introduced, allowing Antonelli and Verstappen to pit under reduced speeds and gain a significant advantage. By the time Norris reached the pits, the VSC period was over.
His problems continued when McLaren suffered a slow stop of around seven seconds. Norris returned to the circuit in fifth, effectively ending his hopes of converting pole into victory.
Charles Leclerc inherited the lead by staying out on his hard tyres, with Ferrari hoping another safety-car interruption would give him a cheaper opportunity to pit. When that never arrived, Leclerc finally stopped on Lap 48, leaving Antonelli, Verstappen and Norris to fight for the podium.
Norris eventually closed in on Verstappen but could not find a way past on the difficult-to-overtake circuit. The Dutchman survived a late challenge to finish second, with Norris settling for third.
"It's good to win but it doesn't feel as good because I think Lando deserved to win," Antonelli admitted after the race.
George Russell finished fifth after a complicated strategy, while Liam Lawson took sixth for Red Bull. Franco Colapinto finished seventh for Alpine, followed by Oscar Piastri, Arvid Lindblad and Nico Hulkenberg.
Lewis Hamilton's race ended early after brake problems forced Ferrari to retire his car. Stroll also retired with brake trouble, while Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez failed to finish because of separate issues.
Antonelli's latest win gives him an 81-point advantage over Mercedes teammate Russell after 14 races. Norris, meanwhile, will have to wait for another opportunity.
"We'll take it on the chin," the McLaren driver said. "There could be more wins this year."
