Gwyneth Paltrow has postponed a private dinner she planned to host for OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at her Hamptons home after the event drew criticism online.
The gathering was scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 29, at Paltrow's home in Amagansett, New York. It was described as a private, off-the-record evening featuring cocktails followed by a seated dinner in Altman's honour.
News of the event sparked a wave of criticism, particularly from people in Hollywood who have raised concerns about artificial intelligence and its impact on writers, actors and other creative workers.
The invitation was first reported after it was shared with Hollywood journalist Matthew Belloni of Puck. Belloni took aim at the planned gathering, writing, "I guess summers in the Hamptons just aren't complete these days without sucking up to our new AI overlords. Luckily, Gwyneth Paltrow has you covered."
Others also criticised the actress and Goop founder for hosting Altman. Comedian and activist Matt Bernstein described the OpenAI chief as "one of the most powerful and evil men unravelling our world as we know it," while Los Angeles-based writer Kristen Van Nest accused Paltrow of supporting a company she said was "actively replacing" writers and actors.
Paltrow appeared to respond to the criticism with humour rather than directly addressing it. She shared parody versions of the invitation on Instagram, replacing Altman with fictional characters including Shrek, Jessica Rabbit, M3GAN and Samantha Jones.
In one post, she joked about the menu, writing, "We're serving swordfish burritos, cheddar foam lattes on request."
The dinner was later postponed, with a source telling PEOPLE, "The event was postponed for the time being because of the backlash. The party likely won't happen."
The development comes as Paltrow has continued to build connections within the technology sector. She reportedly invested in OpenAI through Kinship Ventures in 2023 and has also maintained a friendship with Charles Porch, the company's vice president of global creative partnerships.
