Jake Reiner is opening up about the devastating loss of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, eight months after they were killed in their Los Angeles home.
In his first television interview since their deaths, Jake spoke with Good Morning America about the moment he learned his parents were dead, the arrest of his younger brother Nick and how he has been coping with the tragedy.
"It's been eight months. It feels like eight years at the same time. And it also feels like eight minutes," Jake said. "Because every moment that I wake up, I'm reminded of my reality."
Jake recalled receiving a call from his sister, Romy, on the day of the killings.
"Romy told me our dad was dead and then she said, 'I can't find mom,'" he said. "I immediately went into shock."
Rob and Michele were found fatally stabbed at their Brentwood home on Dec. 14, 2025. Their son Nick, 32, was arrested hours later and has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty.
For Jake, the loss has been complicated by his brother's arrest.
"I physically lost my parents. And then Nick was arrested. Now it's just me and Romy, and we have to navigate this by ourselves essentially," he said.
The 34-year-old also spoke about the anger he has experienced since his parents' deaths.
"For me, it manifests into anger. It manifests into rage, into how unfair this was," Jake said. "I didn't get a say in what happened. I didn't get to stop it from happening. I had no choice in the matter. I just have to accept the reality of it."
Jake declined to discuss his feelings toward Nick or his brother's legal defense. He has, however, testified before the grand jury that indicted Nick.
Instead, much of the interview focused on remembering his parents and preserving the causes they cared about.
Jake has been working with the Children's Institute, an organization that was deeply important to Rob and Michele. Rob had previously served as emcee of its annual Cape & Gown Gala, and Jake plans to attend this year's event in his parents' place.
"I don't necessarily know that I have this weight on my shoulders to carry on their legacy," Jake said. "But I do feel responsible for making sure people know them and they remember them."
He also reflected on his parents' relationship with Nick, emphasizing the unconditional love they had for all three of their children.
"My parents had unconditional love for all three of us," Jake said. "They never stopped wanting to help him. They never stopped helping him."
