Harry Styles is opening up about the time he spent away from touring, revealing that the break helped him develop a life outside music and become less concerned with how he was perceived by others.

The 32-year-old singer discussed the experience in a new interview with W Magazine, reflecting on the nearly three years he spent away from the stage before returning with his Together, Together tour.

Styles said that because he began performing professionally at such a young age, touring had become so central to his identity that being at home could sometimes feel uncomfortable.

"In the time that I took away from touring, I watered a side of my life I hadn't paid much attention to previously," he said. "I didn't know what to do with myself sometimes."

The break also gave Styles an opportunity to reconsider the way he viewed himself. He said he had become increasingly conscious of how his actions were being interpreted by the public, particularly toward the end of his previous tour.

"I was a little bit in my head about moving through the world and feeling very aware of how everything was being perceived," he explained.

Styles said part of his time away involved "recalibrating the image of myself" that he felt he had absorbed from other people's perceptions.

"A lot of the time off was about getting back to living from the inside out," he said.

The singer also acknowledged that his relationship with touring has changed. He said the idea of not performing no longer carries the same fear it once did, when he questioned who he was without his career.

"I'm a little more comfortable with who I am if I'm not doing it, which makes touring a lot more enjoyable," Styles said.

His time away also influenced the way he approached creating music. Rather than focusing on expectations surrounding his career, Styles said he wanted to make work he genuinely enjoyed.

"With the work as well, it was about: How do I make something that I really love with no perception of what's expected of me or what people want from me?" he said.

Styles rose to fame as a teenager after appearing on The X Factor and becoming a member of One Direction. He later established a successful solo career, winning multiple major awards, including the Grammy for Album of the Year for Harry's House in 2023.
