A 17-year-old Wisconsin high school student died over the weekend after suffering an injury during a football game, school officials confirmed.
Adam Massman, a senior at Alma Center Lincoln High School, was injured during a football game on Thursday night, Aug. 20, according to Drew Semingson, superintendent of the Alma Center-Humbird-Merrillan School District.
In a letter sent to the school community on Saturday, Semingson said Adam received medical attention from emergency medical technicians who were at the game before being transported to a hospital.
Despite receiving treatment, Adam died from his injuries on Saturday, the superintendent said. The school district has not disclosed the nature of the injury.
Semingson said the loss has deeply affected the school community, noting that Adam's family had strong connections throughout the district. His mother, Brianne Massman, worked as an elementary school counselor, while one of his siblings attended the junior high.
Several other relatives were also connected to the school district, including his uncle and aunt, Jake and Nicki Prindle, who were teachers at Lincoln Elementary. Another uncle, Sam Prindle, served on the Lincoln School Board. Other family members and close friends were also part of the school community.
"This loss touches our Lincoln family in many ways," Semingson wrote in his message.
The superintendent said the district would not provide additional information about Adam's injury out of respect for the privacy of his family.
Adam was a quarterback and defensive back for the Lincoln Hornets, according to NBC affiliate WEAU. His family remembered him as a strong and spirited young man who was quiet by nature and deeply valued his friendships.
In an obituary, his loved ones described sports as one of Adam's favorite parts of life. He enjoyed playing with friends and took part in activities that included football, track and other sports.
"The friendships he made in all aspects of his life were incredibly important to him," his family wrote.
His family also shared the profound impact of his death, saying their home would never be the same without him. They remembered Adam as a beloved son and brother and expressed gratitude for the 17 years they had with him.
Adam is survived by his parents, younger brother and grandparents.
A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 29, in Alma Center, Wisconsin.
