Kate Beckinsale has confronted the intense online scrutiny surrounding her appearance, explaining that her weight loss has been influenced by both grief and a long-standing autoimmune condition.
The Pearl Harbor and Underworld actress addressed the criticism shortly before removing all posts from her Instagram account. Her comments came after years of receiving remarks about her appearance, including accusations that she was anorexic or using drugs.
In an Instagram Story shared on August 8, Beckinsale criticized people who commented on her weight despite her previous efforts to explain what she had been experiencing.
She noted that she had taken several months away from Instagram following the death of her mother, Judy Loe, who died in July 2025 after battling stage four cancer. Beckinsale said weight loss can be among the physical effects of bereavement and expressed disbelief at the continued comments about her body.
The actress also highlighted her diagnosis of mast cell activation syndrome, a condition in which the immune system releases excessive amounts of naturally occurring chemicals, potentially causing allergy-like reactions.
Beckinsale referred to a previously deleted 13-part post in which she had explained the condition. Responding to a person who told her that she "must" eat, she pointed out that eating could potentially be dangerous for someone experiencing the condition.
"Having just made a several slides post about how eating could actually kill me," she wrote, "this is a little beyond."
In a separate video, Beckinsale explained that she had lost much of her immediate family in a relatively short period, leaving her daughter, Lily Mo Sheen, as her remaining close family member.
She said she had been diagnosed with her condition 16 years ago and credited an attentive general practitioner in London with identifying it.
The actress also warned against making assumptions about celebrities based solely on photographs. She referenced the case of actor Chadwick Boseman, whose significant weight loss prompted speculation online before his death in 2020 following a private battle with colon cancer.
"You don't know what's going on in people's lives," Beckinsale said, urging people to show greater compassion toward others.
Her remarks come amid a broader conversation about the consequences of social media scrutiny, particularly when strangers attempt to diagnose or explain changes in a person's appearance without knowing their circumstances.
Beckinsale's message was ultimately straightforward. Behind photographs and public appearances are private struggles that may not be visible to audiences. For her, grief and illness have shaped a difficult period, making unsolicited judgments about her body particularly painful.
She urged her followers to offer people grace and reconsider commenting when they have nothing kind to say.
