Perez Hilton's mother has filed for temporary custody of his three children following the celebrity blogger's hospitalization after a mental health crisis earlier this month.
Teresita Lavandeira submitted the petition in a Miami-Dade family court on Aug. 7, three days after Hilton was hospitalized following a troubling TikTok livestream from his Miami home. According to authorities, deputies responded after receiving multiple calls about a person livestreaming acts of self-harm.
Hilton was subsequently hospitalized under Florida's Baker Act, which allows authorities to temporarily hold someone who may be a danger to themselves or others.
Lavandeira's attorney, Natalie F. Guerra-Valdes, said the family's priority is making sure the children are protected while they deal with what happened.
"My main concern and objective, as well as the family's, is to protect the children and make sure they are safe," Guerra-Valdes said in a statement to PEOPLE. She added that the family wants the children to have "some sense of normalcy" as they begin recovering from the events.
Hilton is the father of Mario, 13, Mia, 11, and Mayte, 8. The children recently moved to Miami with their grandmother as the family sought to be closer to relatives.
According to a statement previously released by Hilton's family, his children, sister and niece were inside the home shortly before the livestream began. Once relatives realized Hilton was experiencing a severe mental health crisis, they "immediately fled" with the children to prevent them from witnessing further distress.
The family said their immediate concern is helping the children recover from the experience and regain a sense of safety. They have also asked members of the media and public to respect the family's privacy and avoid the area around their home.
Hilton's condition was described by his family as "serious but stable" in an Aug. 8 update. They said he had suffered significant blood loss and additional injuries and would require surgery, adding that his treatment and recovery were expected to be lengthy.
