Italian football legend Franco Baresi has died at the age of 66, bringing an end to the life of one of the greatest defenders in the history of the game. AC Milan announced the news, describing their former captain as a symbol of the club whose character, leadership and integrity will remain part of its identity forever.
Baresi devoted his entire professional playing career to AC Milan, representing the club from 1977 until his retirement in 1997. During those two decades, he made 719 appearances, scored 33 goals and captained the Rossoneri for 15 seasons. His remarkable career included six Serie A titles, three European Cups, four Italian Super Cups, two European Super Cups and two Intercontinental Cups.
His outstanding performances also earned him 81 appearances for Italy. Baresi was part of the squad that won the 1982 FIFA World Cup and later captained his country in the 1994 final against Brazil. Despite recovering from a serious knee injury in time for the match and producing an exceptional defensive display, Italy lost on penalties after a goalless draw. Baresi missed Italy's opening spot kick in what became the first World Cup final decided by a penalty shootout.
Widely regarded as one of football's finest defenders, Baresi formed a legendary back line at Milan alongside Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta and Mauro Tassotti. His leadership and consistency made him one of the club's greatest icons. Milan honored his legacy by retiring his famous number six shirt after his retirement and later appointed him honorary president in 2020.
Baresi underwent surgery in August 2025 to remove a lung nodule. His final public appearance came earlier this year during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics at San Siro.
Tributes poured in from across the football world following news of his death. Paolo Maldini described Baresi as the greatest player he ever shared a pitch with and credited him for teaching him leadership, dedication and resilience. Former Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon recalled the privilege of facing Baresi early in his career, praising his class and professionalism.
Inter Milan also honored their long-time rival, describing him as one of the defining figures of the famous Milan derby. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni praised Baresi as an example of loyalty, commitment and excellence, while football officials highlighted his lifelong dedication to a single club as a rare achievement that inspired generations of players and supporters.
