Kristin Cavallari is making sure her three children understand the importance of hard work and financial responsibility. The former Laguna Beach and The Hills star revealed on the Aspire with Emma Grede podcast that she has her kids: Camden Jack, 13, Jaxon Wyatt, 12, and Saylor James, 10 sit in coach while she travels in first class.
"My kids don't just get whatever they want," Cavallari explained. "And if they want something, they have to work for it." She added that the decision to separate their seating was intentional once they were old enough to manage on their own.
"Something as small as they fly coach, I'm flying first class. That was important to me when they became old enough that they could. I'm like, 'Bye guys, have fun back there.'"
The 39-year-old said she is "hyper-aware" that her children are growing up in a privileged environment, with a reality-star mother and former NFL quarterback father.
To counter that, she looks for everyday ways to instill lessons about money. "It's good for them," she said. "And I think it's the little things like that as a parent that make, ultimately, a big difference in the long run."
Her approach extends beyond travel. Cavallari encourages her kids to try entrepreneurship, reminding them, "This is my money. This is not your money."
Last summer, her sons started small businesses in their neighborhood. "One of my boys was washing people's windows. And the other one was washing people's garbage cans. Because if they want something, they got to go work for it. And they got to make it happen."
While she runs her lifestyle brand Uncommon James in Nashville, Cavallari said she structures her schedule around her children, making sure she is home when they finish school.
"There are so many ways to come into being a businesswoman and a mother and there is no one size fits all," she noted. "What works for me is very different from what will work for you."
