Queen Camilla has sparked debate after sharing a photograph with author J.K. Rowling following a meeting at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, Scotland.

On Tuesday, June 30, Buckingham Palace posted images of the meeting, explaining that the Queen and Rowling had come together to discuss their shared commitment to encouraging children to read. According to the statement, the pair spoke about the importance of giving young people access to books and how reading can create opportunities for future generations.

The engagement formed part of Queen Camilla's ongoing efforts to promote literacy and a lifelong love of reading among children.

However, the timing of the post prompted criticism from some social media users because it was shared on the final day of Pride Month. Rowling has faced years of public controversy over her views on gender identity, with critics accusing her of making statements that exclude transgender women.

The Harry Potter author has repeatedly rejected accusations that she is transphobic. Instead, she has argued that her views are rooted in feminism and concerns about protecting the rights and safety of women and girls. In essays and social media posts, Rowling has maintained that discussions around sex based rights should remain separate from gender identity, a position that continues to divide public opinion.

More recently, Rowling criticised former United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer over his appointment of Harriet Harman as Adviser on Women and Girls. Harman has previously expressed support for transgender rights, and Rowling questioned the decision in a post on X.

The debate surrounding Rowling's views has also affected the legacy of the Harry Potter franchise and her relationships with members of the film's cast.

Actor Daniel Radcliffe has publicly acknowledged Rowling's significant role in launching his career while making it clear that he does not share her views on gender identity. In a 2024 interview, he said he remained grateful for the opportunities she gave him but believed people should be free to hold their own convictions.

Emma Watson has expressed a similar perspective. During a podcast interview in 2025, the actress said she would always value the personal relationship she built with Rowling despite disagreeing with her on LGBTQ issues. Watson added that she believes people should not be discarded because of differences in opinion and stressed the importance of compassion even when disagreements exist.

The meeting between Queen Camilla and Rowling has therefore reignited discussion about the author's public profile, with supporters highlighting her work promoting literacy while critics focused on her controversial views and the timing of the royal engagement.
