Lionel Messi has teamed up with Tom Holland in a lighthearted promotional trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, with the football icon joining the Marvel superhero for an adventure through the streets of Manhattan.
Released as the FIFA World Cup enters its knockout stage, the short promotional clip brings together one of football's biggest stars and one of Marvel's most popular characters in a playful crossover designed to build excitement ahead of the film's release.
The trailer opens with Peter Parker relaxing in a café while talking on the phone. His attention is suddenly drawn to an unexpected visitor as Messi walks through the door. Surprised by the football legend's appearance, Peter eagerly tells him that he recognises him.
Messi simply replies, "Sí," before revealing the reason for his visit.
Holding up his phone, the Argentine star says, "Spider-Man." The screen displays the Spidey Tracker, a feature created by Peter's former friend Ned that was recently made available to the public, allowing users to track the superhero's location.
Realising what Messi is looking for, Peter rushes away to change into his Spider-Man suit. Moments later, he returns in costume, ready to greet the football icon as the hero he had been searching for.
The trailer ends with Spider-Man asking Messi whether he enjoys heights. After responding with a puzzled "¿Cómo?", the pair launch themselves into the New York skyline, swinging between buildings while Messi shouts excitedly during the high flying adventure.
Although the footage was created specifically for promotional purposes and is not expected to appear in the finished movie, it forms part of Marvel's growing marketing campaign ahead of the film's theatrical release on July 31.
Fans recently received the movie's first full trailer, which confirmed the Hulk's appearance and offered another glimpse of Sadie Sink's mysterious character. The previews have fuelled speculation that she could be portraying the Marvel Cinematic Universe's version of Jean Grey, though Marvel has yet to confirm her role.
Tom Holland has also been busy promoting the film while attempting to avoid revealing major plot details. During recent interviews, the actor inadvertently confirmed that at least one person still remembers Peter Parker's identity despite Doctor Strange's memory altering spell. He has also remained tight lipped about his involvement in future Marvel projects, including Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, although he has hinted that fans may not have seen the last of Spider-Man.
