James Burrows, the creative force behind some of television's most beloved comedies, has died at the age of 85. His family confirmed he passed peacefully on June 19, surrounded by loved ones.

Burrows leaves behind a towering legacy in television comedy. Best known as co-creator of Cheers, he directed more than 1,000 episodes across iconic series including Friends, Frasier, The Big Bang Theory, and Will & Grace—the latter of which he helmed in its entirety.

Over his five-decade career, he earned 11 Primetime Emmy Awards, five Directors Guild of America Awards, and a lifetime achievement honor from the DGA in 2015.

His family described him as not only a master of comedy but also a mentor and a deeply kind presence. They noted that his approach to humor was rooted in humanity and connection, a formula that helped shape generations of sitcoms. Beyond his professional achievements, he was remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

"Burrows will be remembered for something even greater: his kindness, generosity, and unwavering belief in the people around him," the family statement said. "He possessed a rare ability to make everyone better and was known for remembering every person he met by name, making colleagues at every level feel seen, valued, and appreciated."

Tributes poured in from across Hollywood. Eric McCormack of Will & Grace called him "a giant" and "the 800-lb gorilla of television comedy for fifty years." Lisa Kudrow thanked him "for everything," while Beth Behrs recalled his warmth and humor during rehearsals for 2 Broke Girls. NBC described him as "the man behind the curtain," whose loss is "immeasurable."

Burrows' influence extended beyond the screen. He famously nurtured the young cast of Friends, taking them to Las Vegas before the show's premiere to bond as a group. Jennifer Aniston later credited him with teaching the ensemble "everything we know about comedy timing, support, collaboration."

James Burrows is survived by his wife, Debbie Easton, four daughters, and seven grandchildren.
