American rapper Kanye West drew an enormous crowd in Istanbul over the weekend despite years of controversy that have resulted in canceled performances and restrictions across several countries.
The artist, now widely known as Ye, performed before more than 100,000 fans at Istanbul's Ataturk Olympic Stadium in what marked his first European concert appearance since 2014 and his first-ever performance in Turkey.
According to reports from Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency, approximately 118,000 people attended the two-hour event. The audience included fans from numerous countries, including Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Russia and several nations across the Middle East.
The concert represented a significant milestone in Ye's career following a prolonged period of public criticism and professional setbacks. Over recent years, the rapper has faced backlash for a series of antisemitic comments and actions that generated widespread condemnation from governments, businesses and advocacy groups.
Several planned performances across Europe were either canceled or postponed as a result. In April, British authorities denied him entry into the country, leading to the cancellation of a planned appearance at London's Wireless Festival. Additional concerts in France and Poland were also abandoned amid growing controversy.
One of the most contentious moments involved the release of material that referenced Nazi imagery and included statements widely condemned as promoting extremist ideology. These incidents significantly damaged the rapper's public reputation and led many organizations to distance themselves from him.
Despite the criticism, Ye continues to maintain a loyal fan base. The strong turnout in Istanbul demonstrated that many supporters remain willing to attend his performances regardless of the controversies surrounding him.
Earlier this year, Ye attempted to address the backlash through a public apology published in a major American newspaper. In the statement, he renounced previous comments expressing admiration for Adolf Hitler and attributed some of his behavior to an undiagnosed brain injury and untreated bipolar disorder.
The Istanbul performance now serves as a notable comeback moment as Ye prepares for additional concerts in the Netherlands. Whether the successful event marks the beginning of a broader return to international stages remains uncertain.
What is clear, however, is that the rapper remains one of the most polarizing figures in modern entertainment. While critics continue to question his actions, his ability to attract massive audiences demonstrates the enduring influence of his music and celebrity status.
