A'ja Wilson has shared new insight into why she and her boyfriend, Bam Adebayo, chose to keep their relationship private for several months before confirming it publicly.
Speaking in a Vanity Fair interview as one of the magazine's cover stars, the WNBA standout explained that the decision to stay quiet early on was intentional. She said both she and Adebayo wanted time to build trust and stability in their relationship without outside pressure or attention.
Wilson explained that their priority was making sure they felt secure as individuals and as a couple before sharing their relationship with the public. She emphasized that establishing a strong foundation was important to them, especially given their high-profile careers in professional basketball.
Rumors about the pair first began circulating in mid 2024 when they were spotted together ahead of the Paris Olympics. Despite growing speculation, neither athlete confirmed the relationship for months. Wilson later made a subtle acknowledgment in early 2025 during NBA All-Star Weekend, which effectively confirmed they were together.
Since then, Wilson has offered occasional glimpses into their life as a couple, though she remains careful about what she shares. She explained that while people know more about their relationship now than before, they still choose to keep many details private. She said this is partly because of the scrutiny that comes with public life and the negativity that can sometimes come with it.
Wilson also spoke warmly about their dynamic, describing their relationship as playful and grounded. She said they enjoy spending time together and often bring out a lighthearted side in each other, joking that they are "two big kids" when they are together. Despite their competitive careers, she said they make an effort to keep things fun and balanced.
Beyond their personal connection, Wilson highlighted the support they give each other professionally. She said she watches Adebayo's games with both a fan's admiration and a player's understanding, appreciating the work and dedication behind his performances.
