Conan O'Brien has opened up about the emotional aftermath of a tragedy that unfolded shortly after filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner attended a holiday party hosted by the comedian and his wife, Liza Powel O'Brien.

Rob and Michele were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Dec. 14, one day after attending the gathering with their son, Nick Reiner. Authorities later arrested Nick, 32, who has since been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Reflecting on the events in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published March 9, O'Brien described the shocking sequence of events that followed the party. "Very simply, we had a party, we invited our really good friends and then, the next day, this terrible thing happened," he said.

The late-night host acknowledged that his name and the party became part of public discussions surrounding the case, but emphasized that the real loss was far greater for the Reiner family. "Whatever difficulties my wife and I have experienced having our name attached to it are nothing compared to the scale of the tragedy for the family and the loss of Rob and Michele," O'Brien explained.

He added that public attention is sometimes unavoidable for people in the spotlight. "If you're a known person, your name is going to get dragged into things sometimes," O'Brien said, noting that for him the focus remains on the couple's passing. "But it is not a hardship. There is only sadness that they're gone."

In a previous interview with The New Yorker, O'Brien reflected on the shock he experienced after learning about the tragedy only hours after seeing the couple. He explained that saying goodnight to them at the gathering and then discovering the next day that they had died left him deeply shaken, adding that he remained in shock for some time and struggled to process how something so awful could happen so suddenly.

The comedian also reflected on the friendship he and his wife had developed with the couple over time. O'Brien shared that they had been spending a lot of time together and described Rob and Michele as genuinely kind people. He also noted how passionate Rob was about national issues and how openly he expressed his views, adding that it remains difficult for him to comprehend how someone so vocal and engaged could suddenly be gone.

Nick Reiner's next court appearance is scheduled for April 29 as the case continues to move through the legal process.
