Hailey Bieber is opening up about the unexpected road to motherhood, revealing that her first pregnancy came as a surprise amid concerns about a medical condition that can increase the risk of miscarriage.
The Rhode founder, 29, spoke candidly during an appearance on the SHE MD podcast alongside co-host Mary Alice Haney and her OB/GYN Thaïs Aliabadi, where she reflected on welcoming her son Jack Blues with husband Justin Bieber, 32.
When asked whether she had been trying to conceive, Hailey made it clear the pregnancy was unexpected. "It was a surprise," she said, explaining that her doctor had previously been monitoring a uterine septum, a congenital condition involving a thin wall within the uterus that can complicate pregnancy.
Hailey recalled that Dr. Aliabadi had advised keeping a close watch on the condition because it could potentially cause issues. The model admitted she had not been planning for children at the time and had expected to address the concern later. Instead, she said she "magically got pregnant."
Dr. Aliabadi acknowledged her immediate concern upon hearing the news. "And then she calls me, and she's like, 'I'm pregnant!' And I'm like, 'No!'" the physician recalled on the podcast.
Medical experts note that a uterine septum can vary in severity. In Hailey's case, her doctor confirmed the condition was moderate. According to Dr. Aliabadi, the anomaly affects between one and three percent of women and carries a notable risk profile.
"Yours was moderate. It affects 1 to 3% of women, and with moderate, you have a higher risk of miscarriage with the pregnancy," the doctor explained. "And so the risk for her was about maybe 25 to 40% risk of miscarriage. And a 10 to 20% risk of preterm delivery."
Hailey admitted that the possibility of an early birth was their biggest concern, particularly given her family history. However, she said her body ultimately responded well as the pregnancy progressed.
"Which I think was our bigger scare," she shared. "Because we realized as the baby was growing, the septum it was, you know, expanding. Everything was opening and doing what it needed to do, luckily."
Given her anatomy and medical background, including a mini stroke and heart procedure in 2022, Dr. Aliabadi ordered a PreTRM blood test to assess the risk of premature delivery. Hailey ultimately tested low-risk, which provided reassurance for the remainder of her pregnancy.
Despite the uncertainty early on, Hailey remained optimistic. Dr. Aliabadi recalled the moment she outlined the risks, saying the model responded with confidence.
"I never forget, as I was telling her, 'Well, these are the risks,' she looked at me. She's like, 'You know what? I believe that everything's gonna work out fine.' ... And I looked at her, and I'm like, 'I think so too.'"
Hailey and Justin who married in 2018, are now embracing life as first-time parents. Speaking recently about motherhood, she said, "I just love to spend time with my son," adding that watching him grow has made her more aware of how quickly time passes.
