New details have emerged surrounding the death of Food Network chef Anne Burrell, who passed away last year at age 55. According to a police report obtained by PEOPLE, investigators discovered a "suicidal note" in the primary bedroom of Burrell's Brooklyn home, along with several journal entries expressing similar thoughts.

The report indicated that Burrell's husband, Stuart Claxton, noticed something unusual in the bedroom the morning of June 17, 2025, which led him to find his wife unresponsive. Emergency services were called immediately, and Burrell was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities later confirmed her death was ruled a suicide. The New York City medical examiner's office determined her cause of death as acute intoxication resulting from the combined effects of several substances, including diphenhydramine, cetirizine, ethanol, and amphetamine.

Burrell's husband, family, and colleagues paid tribute to the beloved chef following the news. Her family described her as a "beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend" whose "smile lit up every room she entered." They added that her warmth, spirit, and love "remain eternal" despite her passing.

In the days leading up to her death, Burrell had been actively pursuing personal projects, including her improv comedy debut at The Second City NYC in Brooklyn. Sharing her excitement on social media, she celebrated performing in a live show with her improv class, highlighting her enthusiasm for exploring creative ventures outside the kitchen. The Second City NYC community later shared a tribute, praising Burrell for her joy, energy, and "unwavering 'yes, and' spirit."

Burrell had a celebrated career on Food Network's Worst Cooks in America, appearing on nearly every season of the show and serving as a mentor for aspiring chefs. Following her passing, the series honored her during the Season 29 premiere with a dedication and the addition of a crisis hotline to support viewers.
