Catherine O'Hara's official cause of death has been confirmed following the award-winning actress's passing at age 71 on January 30. According to reports based on her death certificate, the celebrated performer died from a pulmonary embolism, with rectal cancer listed as an underlying condition she had been living with for several months.
Medical findings indicated she was taken to a Santa Monica hospital after symptoms began and died within hours. Earlier statements from her representatives had said she passed away after a brief illness, without providing additional detail. Authorities later confirmed the circumstances and noted that she was cremated.
Born in Toronto in 1954, O'Hara built a career spanning nearly five decades and became widely recognized for her distinctive comedic presence. She gained early attention on the sketch comedy series Second City Television before transitioning to film and television roles that would define her legacy. Among her most memorable performances were Kate McCallister in Home Alone and Delia Deetz in Beetlejuice, characters she later revisited in sequels. Her film collaborations also included projects with director Christopher Guest and supporting roles in productions such as After Hours and Heartburn.
Television brought some of her greatest acclaim. She earned multiple Emmy nominations and won twice, including recognition in 2020 for her portrayal of Moira Rose in Schitt's Creek. Accepting the award, she said, "I will forever be grateful to Eugene and Daniel Levy for the opportunity to play a woman of a certain age, my age, who gets to fully be herself." She also received a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award for the role. Her later work included voice acting in animated films and appearances in The Last of Us and The Studio, which earned her further nominations in 2025.
Reflecting on the industry during an interview that year, O'Hara described it as "a much more nervous business now," noting that "the internet and streaming must have opened up a world of good and horrific possibilities for people."
Following news of her death, tributes emerged from colleagues and former co-stars. Macaulay Culkin shared an emotional message online, writing, "Mama. I thought we had time," while others expressed their admiration for her long-standing influence and artistry.
Away from her career, O'Hara prioritized family life. Married to production designer Bo Welch since 1992, she often spoke about balancing work and home, once explaining, "I'm with my family as much as I can be." She is survived by her husband, their two sons, and her siblings.
