Jimmy Kimmel is reflecting on one of the most turbulent periods of his career after winning Best Talk Show at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards. The longtime Jimmy

Kimmel Live! host took home his second trophy in the category on Jan. 4, a moment that came after months of controversy, public scrutiny, and uncertainty surrounding his show.

Speaking to reporters backstage following the ceremony, Kimmel described the emotional toll of the past year, which included a six-day suspension of his late-night program in September. While emphasizing that the experience was not physical, he compared the situation to watching his own legacy unfold from the outside.

"It was almost a near-death experience for me," Kimmel said, adding that the situation felt like "watching your own funeral" as events spiraled publicly.

The suspension followed backlash over remarks Kimmel made during a monologue, which sparked widespread debate and ultimately led to his show being temporarily taken off the air. Although Jimmy Kimmel Live! returned later that month, the pressure did not subside. Kimmel became a frequent target of criticism from President Donald Trump, who repeatedly called for the show to be canceled.

Despite the controversy, Kimmel said the reaction from viewers and fellow creatives was overwhelming in an unexpected way. He noted that the response went beyond casual support, describing it as urgent and deeply personal for many people who felt comedy and free expression were under threat.

"To see people react in not just a positive way, but almost a desperate way — it made us realize that when comedians are targeted, that's where many people draw the line," he said. "We're very grateful they drew the line at us."

During his acceptance speech, Kimmel balanced humor with sincerity. He joked that his fellow nominees — including The Daily Show, Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert — "did not care enough" to attend the ceremony. But he also used the moment to thank the writers, producers, performers and union members who stood by the show during its most uncertain chapter.

He closed his speech with a pointed political jab, thanking President Trump sarcastically for providing endless material and controversy, drawing loud applause from the audience.

In recent weeks, Kimmel has continued to defend his position, insisting that attempts to silence him only reinforced the importance of satire and dissent. As Jimmy Kimmel Live! moves forward, the Critics Choice win serves not just as industry recognition, but as reassurance after a year that tested both the host and his team.
