Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., son of legendary champion Julio Cesar Chavez, has been released from jail in northern Mexico pending trial for alleged ties to organized crime. His release was confirmed following a court decision in Hermosillo, Sonora, where a judge determined that Chavez Jr. could continue his legal process outside of detention.
Chavez Jr., 39, was arrested last week after his deportation from the United States. U.S. immigration authorities had detained him shortly after his high-profile boxing match against Jake Paul in July, which he lost in front of a sold-out crowd. Mexican prosecutors have since alleged that he acted as a henchman for the Sinaloa Cartel, a group Washington officially designated as a foreign terrorist organization earlier this year.
His attorney, Ruben Fernando Benitez, strongly denied the charges, claiming that prosecutors lacked evidence to justify the accusations. "There is no evidence," Benitez told reporters, emphasizing that his client had been unfairly targeted. Local media outlets reported that Chavez Jr. has since returned home to be with his family, pending the continuation of his case.
The allegations against Chavez Jr. have stirred controversy in Mexico, given his lineage as the son of one of the country's most celebrated boxers. While his father is revered as a national icon, Chavez Jr.'s own career has been more turbulent, punctuated by both victories and setbacks inside the ring, as well as personal struggles outside of it.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum remarked earlier that she expected Chavez Jr. to face charges related to arms trafficking and organized crime. Prosecutors have yet to present definitive evidence, and legal experts suggest that the case may hinge on whether U.S. and Mexican authorities can substantiate claims of cartel involvement.
