Ashley Biden, daughter of Joe Biden and Jill Biden, has moved to legally end her marriage to Dr. Howard Krein after being together for over 13 years. Court documents were submitted on August 11 in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Ashley and Krein tied the knot on June 2, 2012, at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Roman Catholic Church in Greenville, Delaware. She was baptized in that church. The ceremony blended her Catholic traditions with his Jewish heritage. Joe Biden walked his daughter down the aisle, later recalling, "I kept telling Ash, we've got to open up the church and practice walking up and down the aisle so I can handle it. I think to myself, aw, God, my little girl! This can't have passed so quick."
The couple met in 2010 through her late brother, Beau Biden, who died in 2015 after battling brain cancer. The couple got engaged in October 2011 when Krein proposed at sunset in Big Sur, California. After their wedding, they settled in Philadelphia, where Krein was employed at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
Hours after filing the divorce, Ashley shared an Instagram Story of herself walking through a park and giving a thumbs-up, accompanied by Beyoncé's "Freedom" in the background. She also shared a quote reading, "New life, new beginnings means new boundaries. New ways of being that won't look or sound like they did before," set to Lauryn Hill's "Freedom Time." Another post quoted Bob Marley: "Let your smile change the world but don't let the world change your smile."
Ashley has largely stayed out of the public spotlight, pursuing a career in social work and activism. In a 2023 interview with Elle, she discussed how she handles public scrutiny, explaining that her focus has been on remaining kind and grounded despite criticism. She noted that her family provides a strong source of support, making it even more difficult to process untrue statements and hostility directed at them based on opinions about her father.
